Xizang Tailings Dam Seepage Prevention Project: Composite Geomembrane Construction Application

2025-08-26

Project Location: 2025, Xizang, China

Project Background: The construction area has high altitude and large temperature differences between day and night, with frequent rain and snow during the construction period. A tailings pond sedimentation dam requires a reliable impermeable layer to prevent heavy metal causing infiltrating and polluting soil and groundwater. The plateau climate poses severe challenges to the adaptability of materials and the construction window period.

Project Solution: Composite Geomembrane (Composite Structure of HDPE Geomembrane + Nonwoven Geotextile)

This project uses a composite geomembrane, which is formed by a double-layered non-woven geotextile (protection layer) on both sides and a middle layer of high-density polyethylene geomembrane (seepage prevention layer) through a thermal bonding process. The geotextile layer resists mechanical damage from the overlying and underlying soil and drains pore water, while the geomembrane layer forms a impermeable barrier with its molecular compactness, effectively blocking the migration of harmful liquids.

The project is located in the tailings pond area at an altitude of 3800 meters. During the construction period, it encountered multiple rain and snow weather, leading to fluctuations in the humidity of the subgrade and a reduction in the effective working hours per day. Our team adjusted the process according to the plateau working conditions:

  1. Surface treatment: Clear sharp debris from the sedimentation pool base, level and compact it, and then cover it with temporary waterproofing cloth.
  2. Material adaptability treatment: Preheat the rolled materials in a thermal preservation shed before construction to avoid material brittleness caused by low temperatures; quickly lay during rain and snow breaks, using anti-slip working equipment to ensure safety.
  3. Laying and anchoring construction: Unfold a composite geotextile, keeping the geomembrane surface flat; focus on treating the 15-meter section of the anchoring groove, embedding the geomembrane end into the groove, and backfilling to form a sealed anti-seepage boundary.
  4. Special climate response: Immediately stop welding operations when unexpected snowfall occurs, cover the welding area; then clean the joint surface moisture before resuming work, and restart the double-track hot melt welding after surface cleaned.
  5. Quality acceptance: Confirm the integrity of the anti-seepage system through weld seam pressure testing, and anchoring groove sealing inspection.

In this project, due to the high-altitude environment, the low temperature and low pressure have brought a significant impact on both the construction team and the materials themselves. Thanks to the strong qualifications of the construction team of Zhonglong, they have ample experience in dealing with extreme harsh environments and can ensure the smooth progress of the project.
