Laos Xaisomboun Gold Mine Seepage Prevention Project
Project location: Xaisomboun Province, Laos People's Democratic Republic
Project background: The gold mine ore processing produces highly hazardous leachate containing cyanide and heavy metal ions. The local area has a tropical monsoon climate with heavy rainfall, steep mine terrain and a harsh chemical corrosion environment. Therefore, a comprehensive solution that combines seepage prevention, protection and resistance to chemical corrosion is required.

Project solution: Zhonglong Composite Geomembrane (HDPE geomembrane + PP nonwoven filament geotextile composite structure). HDPE geomembrane has excellent resistance and durability and filament geotextile offers protection for geomembrane.
Project construction:
The project is located in a tropical mountainous mine, so our project team has developed a comprehensive construction plan:
Step 1:
Thoroughly clean, level, and compact the site foundation and excavate temporary water-diversion ditches to cope with instantaneous heavy rainfall (for tropical climate), ensuring the working surface is stable.
Step 2:
Lay several square meters of composite geomembrane in solution ponds and leach pads. Ensure that the geotextile surface is up and the HDPE geomembrane layer is down. Then double-track hot melt carried out welding. Finally, ensure air pressure testing passed and continue.

Step 3:
Excavate anchoring grooves at the top of the slope, bury the material ends and backfill with concrete to apply weight. For all pipeline, pillar and other membrane-piercing sections, we applied flexible sealing treatment to ensure the system is fully enclosed.
Step 4:
Construction quality strictly adheres to the GRI-GM13 international standard. Make clear markings for easy verification in the future. This is a essential part of final acceptance.


This project solves the problem of hazardous waste treatment for the Xaisomboun Ore Processing Plant in Laos, and effectively protected the ecological and environmental safety of the lower reaches of the Mekong River. The system is designed for a service life of over 30 years and can withstand intense chemical corrosion and physical stress. The successful implementation of this project has set a high standard example for environmental protection and anti-seepage engineering in the mining field of Southeast Asia, and is another proof of China's advanced environmental protection materials and technology successfully serving the infrastructure construction of countries along the "Belt and Road".
