Why Are Triaxial Composite Geonet Drains Better Than the Biaxial?
What Is a Composite Geonet Drain?
Zhonglong composite geonet drain is a geosynthetic product made by bonding a geonet drain core to one or two layers of geotextile using a thermal bonding process. The core is made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) used to collect and convey water or gas. The geotextile layers are filter, keeping small particles out of the drainage channels while allowing water to pass through. Composite geonet drain can replace gravel or sand drainage layers (approximate 1m thick) and be used for landfill leachate collection, roadway subgrade drainage, retaining wall drainage, tunnel waterproofing and green roof systems.
Based on its structure, common composite geonet drains have two types: biaxial geonet and triaxial geonet.
A biaxial geonet core has two sets of intersecting ribs that form a diamond-shaped grid. Water moves through the grid in multiple directions, but there is no clear main flow channels. The structure is flat and uniform.
(Biaxial Composite Geonet Drain)
Zhonglong Triaxial Geonet core has a three-layer design. Thick longitudinal ribs run straight down the middle, which offer direct drainage channels. The other ribs are the same as biaxial geonet sitting above and below to provide support and stability.
(Zhonglong Triaxial Composite Geonet Drain)
1. Higher Water Flow
Zhonglong Triaxial geonet core deliver water faster because the straight central channels allow water flow in one direction. For projects that need long-distance directional drainage such as landfill leachate systems or slope drainage, triaxial geonet drains must have better performance.
2. Stronger Heavy Loads
With pressure rising up, biaxial cores are lack of load strength and easy to compress. This will reduce core thickness and cuts down flow capacity. Zhonglong Triaxial geonet distribute loads through the more ribs into the main channels, offering a stable triangular support (over 3000 kPa).
3. Lower Overall Cost
Triaxial cores can achieve the same or higher flow with the same area. This means less raw material used and lower shipping costs in construction and projects.

Biaxial composite geonet drains work well for low-load, multi-directional applications. Triaxial composite geonet drains, with the directed high flow, superior load stability and overall cost efficiency, are the preferred solution for large projects like landfills, highways and railways.
