Which Geosynthetics Can Achieve Separation?
With the continuous improvement of people's environmental protection requirements and the deepening of their understanding of geosynthetics, the effects of isolation and protection have gradually become a consideration factor in engineering applications.
Q:What is Separation
Geosynthetics can separate two fillers with different particle size distributions, preventing them from mixing together and losing the material integrity and structural integrity (see Figure a). For example, laying geotextiles between the coarse aggregate of the road subgrade and the underlying fine soil can prevent the coarse aggregates from piercing into the subsoil, ensuring the thickness and integrity of the base layer; at the same time, it helps to prevent the fine soil from being washed into the upper coarse aggregate base layer.

Q: Which Geosynthetics Can Achieve Separation?
Basically, as long as the density of aperture can effectively separate adjacent layers of soil, gas and liquid, the isolation effect can be achieved, preventing them from contacting, mixing and contaminating each other. Therefore, HDPE geomembrane and non-woven geotextile can be used as the main isolation materials.
The HDPE geomembrane has an extremely high anti-seepage coefficient, which can effectively prevent the penetration of any soil, gas and liquid. At the same time, if the thickness of the geomembrane exceeds 1.0mm, it can also effectively resist physical damage and chemical erosion, extending its service life.
The non-woven geotextile itself cannot prevent the penetration of gas and liquid, but the densely arranged pores can isolate most coarse-grained soil and some fine-grained soil. It can be used as an isolation layer alone or in combination with other materials to form composite material isolation layers, such as composite geomembrane and three-dimensional composite drainage net.
