Which Geosynthetics Can Achieve Filtration?

Q: What is filtration?

Filtration refers to the function of Geosynthetics that allows liquids (like water) within the soil to pass through and be discharged, while preventing the loss of upstream soil particles (see Figure *a). The function is similar to that of a traditional sand filter layer.

Q: Which geosynthetics can achieve filtration?

In general, Geotextiles and other composite material formed from them can achieve filtration.

Geotextiles are continuous, planar and flexible materials manufactured through woven or non-woven processes. The structure of geotextiles allows the air and water permeability. Furthermore, because their mesh is dense and even, they can achieve filtration.

Therefore, whether used alone as a protective layer or combined with other geosynthetics to form composite materials, they maintain their inherent properties and provide effective filtration.

Q: Which composite materials use geotextiles?

Besides geotextiles themselves, materials such as composite geomembrane, composite drainage net, bentonite Gcl, GCCM and siphon drainage boards also use geotextiles as protective and filtration layers.
