How to Maintain HDPE Geomembrane?
The geomembrane (such as HDPE, LDPE, PVC…) can be a "great contributor" to engineering anti-seepage. But if it is not properly maintained, the lifespan and performance can be greatly reduced. This guideline talks about how to take care of it and let it "live longer".

I. Daily Inspection and Maintenance
- Regular examination cannot be neglected
Take a look at the membrane surface for any holes, tears or getting aging, brittle and fading. Pay attention to the seams (welded or glued areas) for any separation or cracking. Check if the soil or sand covering has been washed away, ensuring that the membrane is covered tightly.

- Cleaning should be frequent
Remove stones, branches and other "dangerous elements" from the membrane in a timely manner, to prevent them from scratching the membrane. If oil stains or chemical liquids are present, clean them up immediately. Don't let them corrode the membrane.

Ⅱ. Maintenance of the Covering Layer
- The thickness of the soil cover must be sufficient
The soil or sand layer covering it should be at least 30 cm thick, and do not let the membrane is exposed to the sun directly. If it is washed away by rain, quickly replenish it and do not let the membrane "run bare."

- Be careful of plants causing damage
Do not let plants with extensive root systems grow on the membrane, otherwise the roots may pierce the membrane. If you want to green the area, you can first lay a layer of non-woven geotextile or plant some shallow-rooted plants.
Ⅲ. Puncturing Handling
- Heavy machinery should not run on the geomembrane
Prohibit excavators and other heavy machinery from directly running over exposed geomembrane. If construction is necessary, first lay down wooden boards or rubber pads for protection.

- Pay close attention to fixed areas
Check if the edges or fixed points of the geomembrane are loose, and do not let strong winds or water break the joint area.
Ⅳ. Extreme Weather Response
- Hot weather
Sun protection is important. Prolonged exposure can accelerate aging. So quickly cover the film, as it will soften in high temperatures. Do not use sharp tools to touch it.

- Cold weather
Prevent freezing and cracking. The covering layer may crack in winter. Patch any cracks in time. The geomembrane will become brittle in low temperatures. Do not bend or pull it too hard.

Ⅴ. What to do about aging and damage?
Local aging (such as discoloration or flaking): You can fix the piece of geomembrane by welding. If the aging is severe, it is recommended to replace the new geomembrane directly.

Small holes or cracks: After cleaning, use special glue or a patch of the same material to stick it on.
Large area damage: Cut off the damaged part directly, replace the new geomembrane and weld it again.

Ⅵ. Record Monitoring
- Maintenance files needed:
Every time a problem is found during inspection, it should be recorded for future reference. It is important to take photos of key areas (such as joints) for record-keeping and to compare changes in the future.

- Leak detection methods:
If it is a double-layer anti-seepage system, leak area can be found by detecting layers, and regular electrical detection by professional institutions should be arranged (HDPE membrane is applicable).
