How to Combine Different Geogrids in Railway Engineering?
Railway engineering projects have long service lives and high subsequent maintenance costs. Among them, railway subgrade reinforcement works are situated in the middle stage of overall construction. If the reinforcement materials are damaged during acceptance or after being put into use, complete repair is required. However, the cost twill be difficult to estimate.
Zhonglong Environmental Protection is primarily engaged in the production and manufacturing of geosynthetic materials (mainly polymers). Based on Zhonglong's railway engineering materials series, this article explains how to select appropriate materials and specifications.
Subgrade Reinforcement - Biaxial Geogrid
Biaxial geogrids produced from new polypropylene resin have common specifications (tensile strength in MD/CD) covering ≥15 to 50 kN/m, and are certified by CRCC (China Railway Product Certification Center). It is a verified reinforcement material that can be used in railway engineering.
Biaxial geogrids provide horizontal restraint for railway subgrades through soil interlocking, preventing settlement and landslides during long-term use. Generally, biaxial geogrids with a tensile strength of ≥30kN/m can meet the requirements for conventional railway subgrade reinforcement, but more precise data should be determined based on the actual design drawings.

Slope Reinforcement - Uniaxial Geogrid
In railway engineering, there are usually soil slopes on both sides of the tracks. To ensure overall project safety, different reinforcement methods can be used to prevent landslides caused by rainwater erosion or earthquakes.
Among geosynthetic materials, uniaxial geogrids can be used to construct wrap-around reinforced earth retaining walls, which can effectively limit and prevent the natural slope sliding. It is recommended to select the uniaxial geogrid with a tensile strength of ≥100 kN/m for retaining wall. Meanwhile, biaxial geogrids can be used at the reinforcing layer for subgrade of the retaining wall to enhance stability.
