What is GCL? How Does GCL Work? Hydration & Gelation

2025-09-15

Geosynthetic Clay Liner (GCL) are a low-permeability waterproofing material, whose structure is formed by two layers of non-woven geotextiles sandwiching bentonite particles or powder. The main mineral component of bentonite is montmorillonite, which belongs to clay minerals. Because the intermolecular bonding of montmorillonite single crystals is not tight, water can easily seep in, causing the bentonite to swell significantly to form a dense waterproof layer, thereby achieving excellent waterproof properties. It is widely used in waterproofing materials.

The Gelation Process of Bentonite

Step 1: Reaction Conditions

When the groundwater or moisture from any direction (such as from the subgrade or from accidental breaches) contacts the bentonite layer within the GCL, the reaction begins immediately.

Step 2: Hydration Reaction - Expansion

The bentonite begins to rapidly absorb water. Its volume can expand to 10-15 times or even more than the original. After absorbing water, it changes from a dry powder state to a dense, gelatinous mass.

Step 3: Barrier Formation

This expansion process produces several key effects:

    1. Filling gaps: The expanded gel effectively seals and fills any cracks within the GCL, its joints and the subgrade (such as concrete structures) below.

    2. Low permeability: The dense gel has an extremely low permeability coefficient (usually up to the order of 10-cm/s), and is almost impermeable to water, thus forming a very reliable waterproof barrier.

Step 4: Continuous Water Resistance

Once fully hydrated, this layer of gel barrier becomes a permanent, continuous waterproof layer that can effectively resist static water pressure and the penetration of liquids.

The most distinctive feature of the GCL: Self-repairing

This is the most unique characteristic of the GCL. If the waterproofing layer is locally damaged due to accidental reasons (such as subgrade settlement, piercing, etc.), water will rush into the damaged area, trigger the expansion of the bentonite at that location, automatically plug the leak and restore the integrity of the waterproofing layer by gelation.

Once damaged, the main waterproofing materials (such as HDPE geomembrane) will have a persistent leak. However, GCL can be used as a reliable auxiliary waterproofing layer to form a complete high-standard waterproofing system. It is commonly used in situations with high requirements for waterproofing grade.
