HDPE Geomembrane Tips: Texturing Process
There are three main textured surface processes commonly used in the market: nitrogen blown texturing, spray-on texturing and embossed stud texturing.
1. Nitrogen Blown Texturing
During the production of smooth HDPE geomembranes, high-pressure nitrogen gas is injected into the molten polymer. The nitrogen forms numerous micro-bubbles inside the membrane. These bubbles expand the surface. After cooling, a uniform and densely distributed textured surface is formed.
Characteristics:
The textured surface is integrally formed with the base material. It is not prone to peeling. The surface shows a short, velvety texture. The friction coefficient is high. This is currently the most mainstream and widely used texturing technology.
2. Spray-on Texturing
A smooth HDPE geomembrane is produced first. Molten HDPE material is then sprayed at high speed onto one or both sides of the membrane using specialized equipment. After cooling, a textured layer adheres to the surface.
Characteristics:
The textured layer is applied in a secondary process. It is physically bonded to the base membrane. The surface particles are more pronounced and sharper. Adhesion strength and uniformity are the key technical factors.
3. Embossed Stud Texturing
A smooth geomembrane is produced first. At high temperature, the membrane is pressed by an embossing roller with regular grooves. The membrane material flows into the grooves. This forms regularly arranged circular or plum-shaped protrusions on one side. The unpressed areas remain smooth.
Characteristics:
The surface consists of regularly arranged studs. Smooth areas remain between the studs. This structure provides higher vertical drainage capacity through the channels between studs. It also increases surface friction.
