HDPE Geomembrane Tips: Blown Film Process
According to GRI-GM13 (2016) or GB/T 17643-2025, we can see that HDPE geomembranes around the world follow very similar testing standards.
As long as a product meets a series of test requirements (such as tensile strength, puncture resistance,elongation rate, etc.), its performance can be considered reliable.
However, most standards do not strictly define how a geomembrane should be produced. Here, we introduce one common method: the blown film process.

The blown film process is one of the production methods for HDPE geomembranes.
1. HDPE resin pellets are first heated until molten and extruded through a multi-layer co-extrusion system to form a thin film. 2.
2. Then with an annular die and a dual-air-outlet air ring, the film is blown upward into a tubular shape.
3. After that, the tube is folded, slit, and wound into rolls.
The key advantage of this process is that the film is shaped by air pressure. Compared with the calendering process, the stress on the surface is more evenly distributed.
As a result, the material properties of HDPE geomembrane are isotropic. In theory, this allows a higher performance for tensile strength in the machine direction. So it is suitable for projects, which needs higher anti-seepage requirements of HDPE geomembrane.
Zhonglong mainly uses the blown film process to produce HDPE geomembranes (in common thicknesses from 0.5 mm to 2.0 mm). For products thicker than 2.0 mm, we use the calendering process to ensure better and more stable performance.
