Composite Geomembrane Tips: Selection for Landfill Basal Liners
1. Raw Material: HDPE
HDPE geomembrane has excellent chemical stability, withstanding long-term corrosion from the complex components in leachate. With its extreme low impermeability coefficient (K ≤ 1.0×10⁻¹³ cm/s), HDPE geomembrane can ensure the project safety.
Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) or linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) have much lower chemical resistance and tensile strength than HDPE, which leads to the potential aging and cracking.
2. Thickness: 1.0–2.0 mm
Bottom layer (main impermeable layer): Subject to high pressure and significant settlement risk, requiring HDPE geomembrane with thickness of 1.5–2.0 mm.
Top layer (cover): Less force or pressure, generally thickness of 0.5–1.0 mm is sufficient.
*Do not select geomembrane with a thickness lower than this or made from recycled raw materials.
3. Critical Parameter for Landfill
Elongation at break: ≥700%
Puncture Resistence: ≥320 N
ESCR: ≥500 h
Carbon Black Content: 2–3%

4. Fabrics for Composite Material: Nonwoven Geotextile
Mass per Unit Area (m²): 200–600 g/m² (filament or staple fiber)
It is attached to one or two sides of the HDPE geomembrane (usually the top and bottom sides) as a cushion to protect the HDPE geomembrane from sharp stones and also serves drainage and filtration.
Note:
- Choose products with a wider width (such as 6–8 m) to minimize the number of seams that need to be welded on-site, thereby reducing the risk of leakage.
- Thickness is not entirely in accordance with this guideline; it should be based on the design if the environment is complex.
