Biogas and Bioliquid Ponds Anti-seepage Materials Selection

2025-11-24

In biogas engineering, the anti-seepage system of biogas and bioliquid ponds (including anaerobic digestion tanks and storage ponds) is a key component that ensures safety, environmental protection and long-term stable operation. Geosynthetic materials play an essential role in this system.

The anti-seepage system of biogas and bioliquid ponds is a composite liner system made of multiple materials. The main materials include:

(1) HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) Geomembrane

Characteristics: It has an extremely low permeability coefficient (<10⁻¹² cm/s), excellent chemical stability (resistant to corrosion from organic acids, alcohols, hydrogen sulfide, etc. in biogas and bioliquid), outstanding UV-aging resistance (though it should be covered as soon as possible after installation), and high mechanical strength.

Specifications: Recommended thickness is from 1.0 mm to 2.0 mm, which is determined according to pond depth, pressure and specification requirements.

Function: It serves as the primary anti-seepage layer.

(2) Nonwoven Geotextile

Application positions:

  1. Lower layer (cushion layer): Placed between the soil base and the HDPE geomembrane.

  2. Upper layer (protection layer): Placed above the HDPE geomembrane.

Function: The auxiliary protection layer. It mainly provides protection, drainage, filtration and reinforcement.

(3) GCL (Sodium Bentonite Geosynthetic Clay Liner)

Application position: Placed beneath the HDPE geomembrane to form a composite liner with it.

Function: When in contact with water, the bentonite hydrates and swells to form a dense gel-like layer with strong self-healing ability. It serves as the auxiliary anti-seepage layer.

(4) Three-Dimensional Composite Drainage Net

Application position: In biogas ponds, it may be installed beneath the HDPE membrane as a leakage detection layer, or above the membrane to help collect bioliquid and discharge biogas.

Function: It serves as the auxiliary protection and drainage layer. 3D composite drainage net consists of a geonet core bonded with one or two layers of nonwoven geotextile, which can rapidly collect and discharge liquids or gases and reduce the pressure on the anti-seepage layer.
