Bentonite GCL Guide: Installation

2025-12-22

Bentonite Geosynthetic Clay Liner (GCL)

Geosynthetic Clay Liner is the geosynthetic material specifically used for seepage control in applications such as landfill, underground reservoirs and other infrastructure construction.

Installation Method of Bentonite GCL

1. Due to the relatively high self-weight of the GCL, it is recommended to use loaders or similar machinery for handling and placement.

2. GCL shall be connected by overlapping.

3. When installing on slopes steeper than 10°, the number of overlaps along the slope direction should be minimized. Besides, the GCL must extend at least 1,500 mm beyond the slope toe.

4. Any equipment shall not travel over installed GCL. During installation, the ambient outdoor temperature shall not be < 0°C or > 40°C.

5. All exposed edges of the GCL must be fixed to prevent wind uplift.

6. During construction, the surface of the GCL shall be continuously inspected for damage, holes or any other defects. If exist, all shall be repaired using bentonite sealing paste. The damaged area shall then be covered with an additional piece of GCL, which extends at least 200 mm beyond the damaged area on all sides. And the edge treatment should be carried out according to overlap requirements.

7.During installation, the protective cover layer shall be constructed in a timely manner to ensure that the GCL does not come into contact with water before subsequent construction procedures.

8. The placement and overlapping direction of the GCL shall be parallel to the slope direction. When the slope is steeper than 4:1, no transverse overlaps are permitted within 1 m from the slope crest.
