Autumn‘s Construction Window for Geotechnical engineering: North America and Europe

September‘s coming means that autumn has arrived. In this golden season, rainfall gradually decreases, and crops are continuously harvested. At this transition between winter and summer, the construction of civil engineering materials also enters its golden period.

This period is characterized by the end of the hot and rainy summer season in most areas and the yet-to-come severe winter cold. It is the "golden construction period" for many engineering construction projects, especially outdoor and civil engineering projects. The climate becomes cool and dry, which is very suitable for construction. At the same time, this is also a critical window for preparing for the upcoming winter and the spring flood season next year.

According to the world climate change pattern, Zhonglong Environmental Protection suggests that all regions should make good use of the climatic advantages and reasonably plan construction:

Characteristics of Northern Hemisphere Autumn Climate

  1. Construction Golden Period: Suitable temperatures, reduced rainfall, improved site conditions and accelerated project progress.
  2. Flood Preparation: Strengthening hydraulic facilities and repairing the slopes eroded by floods in the summer before the winter snowfall and spring flood season.
  3. Rushing Work Before Winter: Completing basic earthwork before the land freezes or becomes muddy and difficult to work on.
  4. Environmental Protection: The wind is strong in autumn, and uncovered earthwork is prone to dust; after the rainy season, there are many environmentally sensitive areas, which need high requirements for erosion control and sedimentation filtration during construction.

North American Region (United States, Canada)

  • Climate characteristics:

    Early autumn may still be affected by hurricanes/tropical storms (Southeastern United States), followed by drier and cooler weather. Northern and inland areas experience greater temperature differences between day and night—early frost appears, indicating the coming of winter.

  • Core needs:

    Flood control reinforcement, winter protection, infrastructure construction for transportation.

  • Possible projects and geosynthetic material requirements:

    1. Water conservancy reinforcement: After the hurricane season in summer, inspection and reinforcement maintenance are carried out for reservoirs, embankments and river channels. Geomembranes are needed for seepage prevention and reinforcement, geotextiles for reverse filtration and drainage and geogrids for slope and embankment protection.
    2. Road and infrastructure construction: Meanwhile, seize the golden period of construction to carry out expansion and maintenance of highways and railways. Geogrids are needed for soft foundation treatment and subgrade reinforcement, geotextiles for separation and stabilization of subgrade and 3D composite net for drainage.
    3. Waste landfill covering: To accommodate greater precipitation in autumn and winter, temporary or final covering of the waste landfill is required to prevent rainwater from seeping in and forming leachate. Geomembranes and GCL (Bentonite Waterproof Mat) are needed as the impermeable layer, and geotextiles are needed as the protective layer.
    4. Dust control: Exposed soil areas on construction sites need to be covered with geotextiles or eco-containers to suppress dust and meet environmental protection requirements.

European Region

  • Climate Characteristics:

    In western and northern Europe, rainfall begins to increase significantly for a mild and humid climate. In eastern and central Europe, the continental climate characteristics are prominent, leading faster cooling.

  • Core Needs:

    Drainage system maintenance, slope stability, environmental protection and agricultural projects.

  • Possible Projects and Geosynthetic Material Requirements:

  1. Drainage system upgrade and maintenance: To cope with the increased autumn rainfall, urban and agricultural drainage systems require maintenance and upgrades. 3D composite drainage net, siphon drainage board and geotextiles are needed.
  2. Infrastructure maintenance: Repairing slope failures and roadbed damage caused by spring snowmelt and summer heavy rainfall. Geogrids and 3D composite drainage board net are needed for slope reinforcement and ecological restoration.
  3. Environmental protection projects (landfill, contaminated site closure): Similar to North America, the progress of environmental protection projects will accelerate to reduce the infiltration of autumn and winter rainfall. Geomembranes, GCL (Bentonite Waterproof Mat) , GCCM(Cement Mat)and other impermeable materials are needed.
  4. Agriculture and horticulture: Autumn is the sowing season. In slope agriculture or horticultural projects, to protect the soil and retain moisture, it may be necessary to use geotextiles for covering.
