Application Reference of HDPE Geomembrane: Aquaculture

2026-03-25

Geosynthetics are widely used across many fields, and seepage control in aquaculture facilities is a common application scenario. In general, aquaculture systems can be divided into two types——natural ponds and controlled aquaculture systems.

In regions with abundant rural land resources, natural ponds still account for a large share of aquaculture production. However, this method has several drawbacks: water seepage, unstable water quality and high maintenance costs.

When water contact with natural soil directly, seepage will occur. Farmers have to refill water regularly, while surrounding soil may suffer from serious imbalance. This can lead to water contamination and ecological damage, finally increasing overall maintenance costs.

In addition, some countries and regions have restricted or prohibited the use of natural ponds. As a result, controlled aquaculture systems have become more common. HDPE geomembrane is currently one of the most effective solutions for seepage control.

HDPE Geomembrane in Aquaculture:

  1. Prevents water leakage and stabilizes water storage;
  2. Reduces soil-water imbalance and  protect the surrounding environment;
  3. Maintains oxygen levels, limits pathogen retention and lowers disease risks;
  4. Improves cleaning efficiency, reduces maintenance costs and increases overall yield.

How to Select the Thickness of HDPE Geomembrane

  1. General Freshwater Fish Ponds

    Typical freshwater ponds have a water depth of 1.5 to 2 meters. A geomembrane thickness of around 0.5 mm is usually sufficient to meet anti-seepage requirements.

    P.S. This option provides a good balance between performance and cost-effectiveness.

  2. Specialized Aquaculture Ponds (High Stability Requirements)

    For species with stricter water quality requirements, such as eels and softshell turtles, a thickness of 1.0 mm or above is recommended.

    eg. In some eel farming systems, 1.5 mm geomembranes are used to enhance structural stability and further isolate external environmental impacts.

Looking ahead, with the advancement of aquaculture technology and the growing emphasis on eco-friendly farming practices, HDPE geomembranes and similar materials are expected to play a greater role in aquaculture. They will continue to support the sustainable development of the industry.
